The UK has lost 97% of its wild flower meadows in almost 100 years according to Kew Gardens, which says British wildflowers are under threat, impacting pollinators and animals that eat insects such as birds, bats and hedgehogs. Urban development and changes to farming methods have contributed to the decline in meadows, and domestic gardens with fewer long grasses and hedges have exacerbated the problem.
So what can we do?
• Visit www.pollenize.org.uk to buy specially prepared seed packets, each of which rewilds 1m2 of ground with 34 specially selected native wildflower species.
• Install a green roof – Wallbarn’s modular M-Tray living roof is packed with pollinator friendly sedum or native British wildflower. No green roof is too big OR too small.
