An Insight Into Riverlight

A development comprising of six pavilions, rising in height, all with a North-South orientation, Riverlight contains 806 apartments ranging from suites to three-bedroom penthouses. In addition to such a wide range of accommodation, the development has a vibrant mix of leisure and retail facilities at street level.

Stunning Development

This is a stunning development in an area soon set to redefine the geography of London. The area has a new American Embassy (surely leading to a new international hub within close proximity of Westminster), the proposed extension of the Northern Line via a new Battersea Tube Station and the creation of Linear Park – a new green landscaped park spanning from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station. This is a stunning development in a fantastic location, less than a mile from the Houses of Parliament and just a short hop across the river to Chelsea.

Our Role in the Project

We are very proud to have been working on St George Wharf for many years, and this project was the start of the regeneration of the area. The whole of this area is being developed with a series of major skyscrapers being planned or actually constructed now.

We are currently supplying support pads for paving and decking, chiefly for the balconies and terraces on the private blocks but we would like to extend our presence on the new developments with some of our ground products, including as the geotextiles for landscaping and soil stabilisation (it is an area with a high water table, being on old swamp land); Protecto-board for waterproofing membranes, temporary protection during the construction process, basement construction and tanking; Protecto-drain for tanking, basements and subterranean drainage and green roof products and services as there are a lot of roof gardens, ground landscaping and green roofs being planned.

Wallbarn: Pedestals for Paving and Decking

Wallbarn Logo

Wallbarn offers a range of products to assist with Roof and Terrace Finishes

Most roofs are built-to-falls for drainage purposes. Where the level between the door threshold and the drainage outlet is significant, where the roof falls in more than one direction, where large drops or channels are present, or where there are multiple and complicated changes in the fall and levels across the roof – then the ASP range of Adjustable Support Pedestals are the perfect tools.

To view the full range of pedestals available, please visit the dedicated area of the site by clicking here.

Making Designer’s Tasks Easier

Wallbarn Logo

Wallbarn has been supplying products for use in structural waterproofing and landscaping in UK for over 20 years and we always strive to make the designer’s task easier. We have developed a number of new products in 2017 to give greater flexibility and scope to designers and installers.

Our ethos has always been to make installation user friendly and future-proof. Our products are very much modular in concept; from the modular M-Tray® green roofs, through the suspended pedestal paving and decking systems, to the new ultra-fast iDecking, the specially designed decking concept which requires no screws or fixings.

Modular Green Roofing Systems

M-Tray® is a modular green roof system, designed to give a long-lasting living roof with minimum maintenance. Each tray unit is a mini green roof in its own right, each module clicks together to form a seamless, instant green roof. Installation couldn’t be easier. These lightweight modules are simply laid onto the roof or terrace deck and clicked together. The clip fastenings on the sides of the modules provide an easy-to-fit but extremely solid fixing, so that when all modules are connected a single layer is created, securely in place. The joints will become invisible as the sedum grows. Each module can be carried by hand. It really is a living carpet tile.

Applicators do not need to worry about loose substrates spilling onto and potentially damaging waterproofing membranes. Sheet membranes blowing off the roof is a thing of the past.

Adjustable Pedestals

Clients wanted a solution for paving or decking at extremely low heights. We spent over 12 months designing a fully adjustable, telescopic pedestal suitable to hold both paving slabs and timber joists. We developed the MINIPAD 10-20mm. This pedestal is fully adjustable so split-millimetre differences in height are achievable. At these very tight height levels adjustment is a problem, so we designed the pad with a series of spokes around the circumference and a handle on one side to allow “fat fingered” contractors to twist the units whilst the slab is in place.

Why has Wallbarn developed such a low height pedestal? Mainly due to the increasing levels of retrofitting in paving and decking systems. Obviously, it is far easier and cheaper to overlay, rather than take up and replace old terrace surfaces.

Also new are the BALANCE adjustable paving pedestals. Consider roof decks laid on built-up felt membranes, where a sizeable overlap across the rolls exists. This leads to ridges being present across the roof and sometimes the pedestal “pivoting” across these ridges.

The BALANCE headpiece auto-levels up to a maximum change of 5%, so it can arrest a fall up to 5% – or approx. 2 degrees. This headpiece is different from other self-levelling heads on the market. The pedestals will remain stable and the centre of gravity will pass through the centre of the pedestal, eliminating the risk of the pedestal slipping on the ridge areas. For further falls or slopes, Wallbarn’s slope correctors can be added to the baseplate, up to a maximum slope of 10%. For roofs with greater than a 10% fall, pedestals are not the recommended solution.

Wallbarn is also launching a simple but very effective product for use when paving up to walls and parapets. The metal plate for paving is a simple stainless steel plate which is placed on top of the headpiece on pedestals laid up to the wall. As Wallbarn’s standard baseplates are 200mm in diameter and the headpieces are 150mm in diameter, the end slab can overhang the headpiece slightly, risking that slab tipping if a person was to stand on the very lip. By adding the metal plate for paving, that edge slab is supported completely, creating a safer area on balcony edges.

Introducing The New Range of Wallbarn Pedestals

Wallbarn Logo

Fresh for 2017, Wallbarn are launching a brand new enhanced range of pedestals designed to make the installation of decking and paving systems quicker and more effective than ever before.

Mini Megapad 10-20mm for Paving Slabs

Available in boxes of 20 units each, this pedestal is an extra mini but fully adjustable pedestal for very tight height thresholds. It has a handle on the side to help installers get their fingers into the tight space and comes with 1 x 5mm thick extension plate; so that the unit (which on its own twists from 10-15mm) can have the plate fitted to the base where it clicks into place, and makes the unit reach up to 20mm.

This product was developed after we received a number of requests for very low but fully adjustable pedestals. Supplied with the extension plate (not without) and is sold in a box of 20 units at a price of £1.40 each.

For more information, please click here.

Mini TD Megapad 10-20mm for Timber Decking

This pedestal is similar to the paving variety but with the TD Megapad headpiece (60mm gap between side bars). It also has a handle on the side to help installers get their fingers into the tight space and comes with 1 x 5mm thick extension plate; so that the unit (which on its own twists from 10-15mm) can have the plate fitted to the base where it clicks into place, and makes the unit reach up to 20mm. It is supplied with the extension plate (not without) and is sold in a box of 20 units at a price of £1.40 each.

BALANCE Range of Adjustable Pedestals

We have also developed a new self levelling headpiece for the adjustable pedestals and introduce them as a new range called “BALANCE” adjustable pedestals. This headpiece tilts on the top of the stem up to 5% slope, so where the roof deck is falling the head will balance to take out the fall in the level beneath. A lot of our competitors are producing similar products so we thought we would develop our own version. It has taken us a long time to develop this and we think it is a superior design. Although the heads will tilt, they are very stable and load bearing, so we think we have created something which will benefit installers. This means there is less reliance on fixed slope correctors under the base, and having a range of 5% fall, they offer a cost saving than having to add 2 x slope correctors to pedestals to achieve the same result.

      • There is a 25-50mm BALANCE pedestal which is a unique design. It can be set at different “steps” to go from 25mm right up to 50mm.
      • The next heights up from 50mm go up to 395mm at the highest. This is a new range, and you will notice that the heights are different to those of the ASPs. This is because the headpiece itself is 15mm thick, so it increases the height of the pedestal. The prices are given in the attached spreadsheet. They are boxed in units of 25 units and your normal 15% discount applies.

How To Fix a Suspended Paving System

Wallbarn Logo

More roof and balcony designs incorporate a completely flat upper surface in order to utilise them more effectively as leisure areas. More attractive paving with spirit-level-flat finishes can be achieved using a much larger variety of different stone and slab shapes using our ASP supports.

Wallbarn’s range of adjustable support pads ensure that even where contractors build their roofs to a fall, to allow good drainage, a completely flat upper level of paving or decking can be achieved.

How Does The Process Work?

Very small, irregular or multiple changes in height can be accommodated using the simple but durable twist mechanism on the stem. Once the slab is placed on top of the support, the whole system locks into place. Falling roofs can be paved to an even finish extremely quickly and effectively using these supports, cutting down labour time considerably. Edges and end of runs can either be bordered with a line of washed pebbles; or by removing the lugs and sliding the support underneath the slab and out of view. Services such as cables or water pipes can be laid underneath the slabs easily, keeping the upper surface uncluttered. With a height range up to 220mm, the void under the slab can be utilised for larger items such as drainage outlets, rainwater harvesting facilities and lighting effects.

Please Note – The support pads come in four sections. The screw and nut fixings are simply twisted on the stem piece to achieve precise adjustment, and sit into the base plate. The head piece clicks into place for a secure fit.

The following video outlines exactly which steps must be followed to create a suspended paving system using the range of support pads available from Wallbarn.

Also Suitable For Timber Decking

For timber decking, we can produce the adjustable support with a joist headpiece. Standard battens sit onto the headpiece with the pegs placed 40mm and 60mm apart holding them in place.

Build a joist framework using the battens and then fix the decking timber onto the top. The weight of the timber will hold the system in place without the need for any fixings into the substrate. Therefore, the waterproof membrane is not compromised. The support base plates should be placed 600mm apart to spread the weight evenly. The timber is raised from the deck, and rainwater drains through the gaps in the decking; so the wood will not come into contact with standing water.

Introducing 7mm Rubber Pads for Paving and Decking

7mm Rubber Discs For Decking and Paving

If your construction project is facing problems due to a restricted height threshold but still needs to raise paving or decking to a level which offers sufficient drainage, Wallbarn’s introduction of a new rubber pad for paving could offer the ideal solution.

Our new 7mm thick rubber disc for paving complete with integrated spacing lugs has been designed to lift paving/decking off the surface by 7mm, making it ideal for retro-fit projects and areas with very low height thresholds.

Tough & Durable

Our 7mm rubber pads are extremely tough and durable and offer the significant benefits of not becoming brittle in cold weather. They are absolutely ideal for any area 7mm Rubber Discs For Decking and Pavingwhere a tight height threshold is present, for example, on refurbishment projects.

In certain circumstances it may be easier to simply overlay the existing surface with a new layer of suspended paving or decking rather than take everything up, and with the 7mm discs this is possible.

Effective Drainage Properties

The upper surface of the pad contains drainage channels which run out to the edges of the circular disc, meaning that rainwater will drain off the upper surface of the disc effectively.

The plastic positioning lugs are incorporated into the pad as they plug into a small hole in the centre of the pad or disc. This ensures that the paving slabs are clearly separated from each other with regular spacing between them, and are held securely in place.

Suitable For Paving & Decking

The 7mm disc is suitable for use with paving slabs and also timber decking. The TD headpiece has side bars 60mm apart, meaning a standard 2” / 50mm wide timber joist can be placed between the bars. The joists will form a framework structure for the decking system and the decking planks are fixed to that framework.

The product is sold as a two part unit, the rubber disc and positioning lug (available for either paving or timber decking) supplied together.

Since the discs are made from rubber, they have a soft, flexible, hard wearing, non-slip profile; which means they protect the membrane beneath from damage. Rubber will also offer acoustic properties and create a separation layer from the deck.

No Mechanical Fixing Required

As with all the Wallbarn supports range there is no mechanical fixing required, the surface is secured by the weight of the slab. This cuts down weight on the roof and also the hassle and mess of laying slabs into mortar. This leads to easier, cheaper and faster installation and makes post-installation site inspection or leak detection much easier.

TD Support Pads Project – Honour Lea Road

Wallbarn Logo

We have recently been involved in the completion of a project called Honour Lea Road – near the Olympic Stadium featuring the installation of TD support pads, which were used in the construction of a timber decking area on a new build project for Wates Construction.

The images below highlight how the roof of the building was designed to have a large terrace to take advantage of the view.

How Were The TD Supports Implemented?

The TD supports were used to raise the timber structures  off the deck to protect the waterproofing membrane from damage. There are also TD Mobile supports in view in some of the pictures.

The client wanted to hold the edge timber joist / batten very securely, so want to screw the support pad into that joist to hold everything together.

More Information About TD Support Pads

These support pads are similar to the ASP range, but manufactured with a set of joist peg fittings placed either 40mm or 60mm apart. We also have a new headpiece with an extra wide joist holder 90mm apart. This has been designed to hold a larger timber joist.
