When Is World Green Roof Day?

    March 7th, 2023

World Green Roof Day is an annual global celebration of green roofs and their numerous benefits to urban environments, taking place this year on June 6.

Globally, towns and cities are going green to combat climate change while providing essential wildlife habitat. By going green, they make life better for everyone involved.

It’s a day to celebrate green roofs

World Green Roof Day takes place annually on June 6th to raise awareness and highlight its many advantages for people and nature. As green roofs have been used to beautify towns and cities worldwide, it is essential we recognize their many positive effects on both humankind and nature alike.

Green roofs are an excellent way to bring lush green spaces to city centres, making everyone happier and reducing stress while encouraging biodiversity in urban areas. Furthermore, they act as natural air purifiers by filtering out harmful pollutants that often abound in urban settings.

A green roof helps to retain rainwater, which can be an issue in urban areas where hard slabs and concrete are common. By using a green roof, stormwater management becomes much simpler, preventing flooding and other issues from arising.

Germany has seen a resurgence of green roof activism over the last several years, with several associations advocating their use. One prominent organization is Fachvereinigung Bauwerksbegrunung (FBB), representing manufacturers, planners, merchants and operators alike.

It’s a day to raise awareness

Green roofs also referred to as living roofs, are an effective way to breathe life into an otherwise dull building. Not only do they improve air quality and cool down urban environments, but they also insulate buildings – enabling people to lead healthier lives.

They’re an excellent way to protect the natural environment and wildlife around them, encouraging the growth of beneficial and beautiful plants. Additionally, rainwater filtering helps prevent flooding and water contamination which may reduce disease incidence rates.

World Green Roof Day, taking place on June 6th is an opportunity to raise awareness about the positive effects that green roofs can have on our climate, cities and well-being. It was founded by U.K. green roof builders Dusty Gedge and Chris Bridgman to highlight their systems’ importance both environmentally and socially.

It’s a day to celebrate biodiversity

Green roofs are an elegant way to improve the environment and promote biodiversity. This year, world green roof day was celebrated around the globe as towns and cities around the world turned green to adapt to climate change, reduce their carbon footprints and promote biodiversity in their local communities. Not only do these create healthy environments but they reduce stress levels for everyone involved – not to mention purify the air and protect homes or businesses from UV rays that could otherwise harm them.

If you’re interested in going green, consider installing the M-Tray modular green roofing system on your roof to create habitats for local and migratory species. Not only will this benefit wildlife, it also extends the life of your roof by reducing stormwater runoff and maintaining healthy temperatures – plus, it adds some vibrant colour to your home or business!

It’s a day to celebrate life

The world is going green to combat climate change, protect biodiversity and enhance the quality of life for everyone. Roofs are one of the primary supporters of this movement; green roofs offer essential wildlife habitat while shielding against storms, drought and heatwaves. Green roofs can even be used to cool buildings, save energy and sequester carbon and water. That is why people around the world celebrate world green roof day on June 6 each year: to promote environmental awareness. They can do this by taking photos of their favourite green roofs and sharing them on social media with the hashtag #WGRD2023- whether it’s your backyard shed or an enormous industrial unit. It’s an effective way to get everyone thinking about the advantages of greening their rooftops while showcasing what their city has to offer.

World Green Roof Day was initiated by Dusty Gedge and Chris Bridgman as a way of celebrating the many benefits that living roofs – like green roofs, brown roofs and blue roofs – can provide to people, nature and the environment.
